It’s a place where nature reigns supreme, and for my September adventure, I sought to immerse myself in this raw beauty without the constraints of a rigid schedule. Renting a van was the perfect solution. With the open road ahead and the freedom to stop whenever something captivated me, I embarked on a journey that promised a deeper connection with the Icelandic wilderness.

The adventure began in Reykjavik, a city where creativity and history seamlessly blend. After a day spent exploring its vibrant cultural scene, the call of Iceland’s wild nature grew too strong to resist. I headed west toward the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where the landscape transformed into a dramatic tableau of cliffs, lava fields, and endless horizons. Driving through thick clouds, with only the road’s centerline to guide me, I felt a profound sense of solitude and awe—each turn revealing a new and breathtaking view.
Iconic Iceland: The Golden Circle Revealed
Next, I ventured into the heart of Iceland to explore the famed Golden Circle. Arriving early in the morning, I had the rare chance to witness the geysers erupt in peaceful solitude, their power even more striking against the quiet landscape. Not far away, Gullfoss waterfall thundered with a force that left me in awe, its sheer power a testament to the raw energy of Icelandic nature.
Wonders of the South Coast
The south coast is a region of incredible natural wonders. At Reynisfjara, the Black Sand Beach, I walked far down the shore, away from the crowds, to focus on photographing the wild, crashing waves. The thrill of retreating just in time as the waves surged higher added a sense of adventure to the experience. Further along, the emerald-green canyon of Fjaðrárgljúfur offered a scene straight out of a fantasy, its sheer cliffs and winding river creating a landscape of surreal beauty. Diamond Beach was another highlight, where ice formations scattered across the black sand glinted like jewels in the soft light.
A Night to Remember: Chasing the Northern Lights
One of the most unforgettable moments of the trip came on our first night. After a day spent hiking up a volcano near the airport, we found ourselves at a secluded church where my favorite Icelandic musician, Olafur, has recorded albums. As we prepared dinner in the van, the sky suddenly lit up with vibrant green Northern Lights. It was a surreal and magical start to the journey—a perfect reminder of the unexpected wonders Iceland holds.
